Many years ago we were all white;
But then a leopard stole one of our young.
A brave young girl ran quickly up to help,
She saved the cub but, wounded by the leopard,
Died. Then we all sadly came together
To show respect to this young rescuer;
And as a sign of grief we pure white bears
Wore shawls of black. But as we rubbed our tears
The shawls left stains of black around our eyes;
And as we held our arms around our heads
In grief, the shawls soon stained our noses black;
And as the shawls touched our ears they too
Turned black. So now we are both white and black
In memory of that brave young heroine.
